Laptops have often been thought of as simply a small, portable computer that can be taken anywhere you go (within reason!). There are actually four different types of laptops varieties currently available however, and it is important to know the differences between them, as prices, features and performance can vary greatly between these laptop genres:
Ultra light Laptops ? Known as sub notbooks or ultra-portables, these laptops usually weigh no more than 4 pounds, and people who travel frequently usually love these types of laptops. Because these laptops weigh very little, they are easy to lug around in a backpack or laptop briefcase…but they are also very small. Typing on Ultra light Laptops, especially if you have large hands, is downright difficult and uncomfortable…make sure you bring along an external keyboard that you can hook up to your ultra light once you arrive at your destination. Ultra light laptops usually lack a CD Rom drive as well, so make sure you have the proper attachments before leaving home. Battery life on Ultra light laptops is usually excellent however!
Notebooks ? This type of laptop usually weighs between 4-6 pounds, with screen sizes from 12-15″. As the laptop grows in size, battery life usually goes down as there are usually more devices and a larger screen to power. The Notebook is considered a ‘regular’ laptop, and usually has a large opening on the side where you can plug-in different devices like a CD-Rom drive, floppy drive, or wireless PCMCIA cards.
Standards ? These laptops are the most commonly purchased types of laptops…they offer a full range of built-in features, including wireless connectivity, CD/DVD drives, network interfaces, multiple USB 2.0 ports, nice sized screens (usually 15″) and a keyboard that is easy to type on. You won’t need to pack along a lot of extra attachments for the standard laptops which is nice. Also, the best deals, discounts and prices can usually be found on standard laptops from all of the major laptop manufacturers.
Extra Large/Gaming ? These bests are best suited as a ‘desktop replacement’. They are usually much faster, louder and have 17″ screens in most cases. The battery life is only about 1-2 hours as these laptops really burn through the power. Their faster processor speeds, larger screens, larger keyboards and heavier size makes them perfect ‘home / gaming machines’. Expect extra large laptops to weigh in excess of 8 pounds. These specialty laptops are also some of the priciest, and will almost always have all options built-in…no need to pack around an external keyboard or CD-ROM drive with these laptops…just make sure you bring a couple extra batteries though!
Make sure you purchase the laptop that will work for your needs, whatever they may be?buying a laptop that is too heavy if you are a frequent traveler will leave you exhausted from hauling it around. Buying an Ultra light laptop if you are a gamer will leave you disappointed. Make sure you evaluate your needs before purchasing your next laptop, and you?ll be smiling instead of grimacing in frustration!

If you are one of those who works with a computer on a daily basis like me you should consider a laptop. I have actually owned three now and I think I would be lost without mine. I still use my desktop PC quite a bit at home but the laptop comes in extremely handy when I am away.
It’s not just convenient owning a laptop but it is also even more fun to use than the desktop. Your laptop can be totally modified to fit your needs and can be an extension of your desktop if need be. I know that I sometimes need to be able to use the same programs that I would normally have on my desktop and thanks to the additional of a 30GB portable drive, I can keep all the programs I would normally need on it and save the space on my laptop. I just plug it in to my USB port and I am off to the races.
You can customize the look of your display settings just as you would with your desktop so your window displays as well font sizes are all a click away.
There are many add ons that you can buy for your laptop to make it more convenient for you to use. If you need more space, you can do as I suggested and get a portable drive that will keep you from clogging up your main hard drive. You can also get smaller flash drives for moving information from one place to another.
Sometimes the way that the mouse is configured on a laptop makes it inconvenient or uncomfortable to use, if this is the case for you then you can get an external mouse that plugs into your laptop to make it easier to use, the same also can be said for the keyboard. If the keyboard seems too small or awkward, then plug in an external one.
Many times you will find that if you use your laptop often that it will begin to overheat, if this is the case for you then you should look into an external laptop cooler. Laptop coolers can help keep your system cooler and prevent damage from overheating.
If you are not happy with the sound of the internal speakers that your laptop came with you can buy a set of small powerful speakers and plug them into your laptop to give you better quality and louder sound.
If you travel quite a bit I highly recommend that you get a hard laptop case. Laptops are fragile and it is very easy to screw up a screen, they aren’t cheap to replace.

If you have a cellphone and laptop, it is possible to work almost anywhere. You can get a lot of work done in airports and hotels during the course of a business trip. Often you need to revise agreements, proposals and presentations while on the road or during a client meeting.
However, the risk of theft or damage to your laptop is much higher on a business trip than during the normal office routine. If you are only away for a day or two, this is not a problem. When your trip extends to a week or more, however, it pays to be prepared. Since the changes made on business trips are often critical, it makes sense to have a backup in case something goes wrong. Here are some ideas to protect your data on a trip:
If you have internet access during the trip, a good idea is to email changed files to an online email account, with a note to explain the changes. This is excellent for 3 reasons:
1. The files are kept safely out of harm’s way while you are on the trip;
2. You can retrieve them anyplace you can get online.
3. You have a trail of the changes that were made. This could come in handy when trying to compare slight changes in wording in a 50-page contract.
If you do not have Internet access, or the files are too big to send, you can use a USB thumb drive or a CD/DVD writer. If you do have a built-in CD or DVD writer, taking along some blank CDs or DVDs is a better choice than the thumb drive:
1. A thumb drive is more likely to be stolen. With a CD or DVD you can keep one copy in your hotel room and take one with you.
2. Storage space for multiple versions: You can keep filling up a CD or DVD with multiple versions of files. If you fill up a disk, just use the next one.
3. Having extra blank CDs or DVDs can be useful for copying presentation materials, presentations and proposals onto to give to the client at the end of a meeting.
Business travel is stressful enough without having to worry about losing your work. Whichever of these methods you use, following these suggestions can give you peace of mind, knowing that your data is safe even while you are on the road.
Johan has spent too many hours doing backups and restores using overly complicated programs. He then created =”_new” “abbackup/”>Abbackup, a program that does backups of large amounts of files, photos and music to CD-R and DVD-R, quickly and easily.With Abbackup’s automatic refresh system, you only need to do a full backup once. Do you want to regain that shiny new laptop look? Make your own Laptop Screen cleaning kit with simple household ingredients:
Steps
* 1. Dilute isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) into a mix with no more than 50% alcohol and the rest distilled water.
* 2. Pour the mix in a small spritzer bottle, the type that you push from the top to get a fine mist. It works really well at getting just the right amount on your screen with a spray on each section.
* 3. Apply the mix to a cotton cloth, such as an old T-shirt, lint-free microfiber cloth, or other very soft cloth. A bigger cloth is best, since it will help to reduce the risk of leaving streaks across the screen from finger pressure.
* 4. Move the cloth against the screen in a counter-clockwise motion. Apply an even pressure to the cloth but be careful not to press too hard against the screen.
Tips
* Expensive store-bought products such as Kensington Screen Guardian contain the same mixture of alcohol and water. 3M’s Antistatic Cleaning Solution contains this same mix, plus Ethylene Glycol.
* If you apply too much of the solution and it leaves your screen damp, simply wipe off the excess.
* Tissues and toilet paper will likely leave fine flakes of paper on your monitor…don’t use them.
* You don’t want mineral spots on your screen, so don’t use tap water, distilled is best.
* Using a 100% cotton cloth or shirt alone, without the alcohol mix, can sometimes produce the same smudge-free results without going to the trouble of mixing your own solution.
* If you’re a photographer, you can use your lint-free lens wipes instead of a soft cotton cloth.
* If you are looking for a cheap way to get your hands on ready-made cleaning solution, try CD/DVD cleaner, which is often 55% Isopropyl alcohol and is not harmful to most plastic surfaces.
Warnings
* Do not drink Isopropyl alcohol. It is not grain alcohol. It is toxic.
* Do not use cheap paper towels. You will scratch the LCD screen.
* Avoid using products such as W because these contain ammonia and it can degrade the LCD panel.
* Shut down your laptop, unplug it from the power adapter, and remove the battery before cleaning it or you risk exposing yourself to an electrical shock.
Things You’ll Need
* Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
* Distilled water
* A soft cotton cloth
If you don’t want to go through the trouble of making your own laptop screen cleaning solution, here are some alternative commercial laptop screen cleaners.
By keeping your laptop monitor clean, you can extend the useful life of your laptop, and have a more enjoyable viewing experience…no one likes trying to work on their laptop if the monitor is filthy or difficult to see. These tips will help ensure your laptop health.

A laptop is essential for students and working individuals. Because of its portability, users can write important papers, connect to the Internet via wireless modems, and can even watch movies anytime and anywhere. But without proper care, this machine can break down, and especially, there can be problems with the LCD monitor. Here are some tips that can help you in troubleshooting your laptop’s LCD monitor.
Is there something wrong with your screen? If this is so, then there is a possibility that the LCD (liquid crystal display) backlight of your laptop is broken. The LCD backlight is the source of light that gives you a clearer visual of your screen. Symptoms of LCD damage include:
- Dim laptop LCD
- Flickering screen
- Faint images on your LCD
- No video image
- Faded laptop LCD
A laptop backlight is composed of four parts and these are:
- Laptop inverter
- LCD lamp
- Inverter cable
- Toggle switch
Damage to any of these parts may result to the symptoms stated above. Unfortunately, there is no other way to be sure if one of these parts are damaged without using a tester. Some of the main causes of damage to these parts include age and excessive use of your laptop. Parts such as the LCD lamp usually last for two years minimum.
Aside from the blacklight, it is possible that your LCD screen itself is damaged. This problem can be very serious because the LCD is the most fragile and expensive part of your laptop. Symptoms of LCD damage include:
- Decolorization of your screen
- Appearance of stripes or lines on your screen
LCD damage is usually caused by hard impacts to your laptop. Remember, the LCD is a very sensitive and fragile piece of equipment. Even the slightest amount of pressure on your LCD can cause it to break.
The only way to repair the backlight and the LCD monitor is to replace them. Replacing the LCD monitor alone can cost you around $250 and that is apart from the $120 service fee that most laptop repair companies charge.
